Supporting therapists navigating the complexities of disability

Clinical Consultation for Therapists

The Reality

As a therapist, you are trained to handle complex psychological dynamics. However, when working with families in the intellectual/developmental disability or special needs world, you may feel at a loss for the presenting issues. Supporting these families was not covered very well in graduate school.

Clients in the disability community face highly unique stressors, and their emotional struggles are often intertwined with frustrating systems at the local, state and federal levels. Clinically, the presentation can be overwhelming and confusing as you endeavor to provide emotional support without understanding the full reality of their daily lives.

Learning about the impact of disability in a family takes time.

How I Partner With You:

I provide specialized clinical consultation and case-focused guidance to licensed therapists who want to deepen their competency in the disability space.

Whether you need a single session to untangle a specific case hurdle or ongoing support to build your confidence in this niche, I work with you to help you think through your issues and learn about supporting families living with disabilities. Your client may be a parent, grandparent, or sibling of an individual with a disability; their lives are profoundly affected, and they need specialized support to cope and continue growing.

Consultation sessions are tailored entirely to your specific clinical questions and case needs.

Consultation with me can help if you are…

  • Unsure how to support family members through the specific grief, chronic stress, or overwhelm of special needs caregiving

  • Struggling to understand state/federal disability systems and how they actively impact your client’s mental health

  • Worried that you are not fully aware of complex family dynamics that occur in the context of disability

  • Seeking to expand your clinical competency in an area in which you don’t have much experience (yet!)
